Consultant Overview: John is a Consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon who considers his job to be about helping people to achieve a better quality of life by an understanding of their problems and a thoughtful application of surgical techniques, regardless of the initial underlying problem. John was born and educated in Suffolk, spending most of his young life windsurfing, playing hockey and dismantling things that he should not have. Coming from a family with several generations of doctors it seemed only natural to follow in that career and in 1986 he started his medical training at Guy’s Hospital in London. After completing his general surgical training he was appointed to the Thames Regional Specialist Training Programme in Plastic Surgery. Now as an NHS consultant at the Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead he is part of a team providing plastic and reconstructive services to South East Thames region. His subspecialty interests are management and reconstruction of cancer of the skin, breast, head and neck, and perineum as well as the management of difficult soft tissue wounds. The understanding of anatomy form and function that reconstruction brings is also applicable to aesthetic surgery of all parts of the body.
