Complex Hernia Surgery at the McIndoe

The McIndoe Surgical Centre now offers surgery for all types of abdominal hernia including Pre-peritoneal Repair for complex, multiple and recurrent hernias.

Our General Surgeon Mr. Richard Reyes specialises in all types of hernia repair and abdominal wall reconstruction especially pre-peritoneal repairs.

Complex, multiple and recurrent hernias are more difficult to treat. Repairing these hernias ‘from the outside’ is the conventional approach and is often more difficult, with less guarantee of success. Repairing these hernias from ‘behind’ however, by placing mesh deep to the muscle (pre-peritoneal repair) is usually much more successful than an external or conventional repair and the chances of hernia recurrence are very low - approximately one tenth of the external repair. This type of hernia surgery is highly specialised and should only be carried out by surgeons experienced in the technique.
