I looked like I’d gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson

Mark Halligan, from Belfast spent a lifetime shielding away from prying eyes ashamed of his hooked nose and sunken eyes.

In desperation he withdrew his lifesavings four years ago and walked into a high street clinic claiming to specialise in plastic surgery. After a quick 15 minute consultation he parted with £5,500 for a nose operation and waited for his operation date to be confirmed.

Weeks later home from surgery – his face was a bleeding mess after his surgeon abandoned the operation when he could not stop Mark from bleeding. Instead of a pleasing new look his nose was more out of shape than when he went into surgery.  The wound was left open and bleeding profusely. When Mark woke from surgery dizzy and vomiting he instantly knew something had gone seriously wrong, despite informing the surgeon of his blood condition. Mark was left upset and burst out crying.  One of his nostrils had collapsed and the operation had made him look worse.

When eventually Mark felt well enough to travel he visited the surgeon’s offices but was never allowed to speak to him, with secretarial staff making one excuse after another.

Looking back Mark feels he should have done more research before his procedure, but like so many others thought if he paid good money he would receive good care,

About three years after his nose operation Mark’s GP referred him to Mr John Pereira who said he would do everything he could to help him. Mark explained ‘Mr Pereira was true to his word, he told me the work carried out by the first surgeon had been a mess and had left him very little to work with.’  He was fantastic during the lengthy consultation and when he told me not to worry I trusted him.  He made me go away and have a good think about the procedure and the risks before I made up my mind. A few weeks later I had my operation, and I think Mr Periera performed a miracle. ‘

Mark was left with the slightest of scar on the bridge of his nose and had a little bit of cartilage removed from his ear so Mr Periera had something to work with. He can breathe through his nose again and feels he can face the world for the first time.  At 40 he now feels as if life is just beginning!
